Reasons Why Metal Jewelry Can Make Your Skin Green
If you’ve ever had a piece of jewelry that leaves a yellowish spot on your skin you’ve most likely asked yourself why it does that. Generally there is a reaction caused by the metal in the jewelry to people who wears jewelry that is cheaper.
Skin greening can happen to some faster than others; though, due to the fact that everyone has different skin.
Even the more expensive jewelry can turn you green too; reason being it’s not one hundred percent pure- no matter how much gold or silver is in it. Platinum hardly ever reacts with skin so you shouldn’t have to worry if you own platinum jewelry. If you have gold jewelry and want to stop it from reacting to your skin make sure that you don’t have gold plated or gold rinsed jewelry – its a cheaper metal with a thin gold layer and that coating wears off very quickly. For 100% gold jewelry thats not rinsed or plated choosing a higher karat will help keep green spots from showing up on your skin. Jewelry made from copper will react with skin and you’ll have to just accept that if you wear copper.
Avoid sweating in your jewelry it can increase the green skin effect you might also ask your jeweler if they can add a layer of protective coating – to minimize the amount of green reaction your skin has. If you can find something to keep the reaction to a minimum you can wear inexpensive jewelry whenever you want. Just remember<, the green effect won’t hurt you. It’s just a skin reaction and not allergies. Allergies (such as those to nickel) will make you red and also will make your skin inflamed and itchy. It’s not anything like a green skin reaction. If you do show signs of allery stop wearing the jewelry. If it’s only turning your skin green you can certainly continue wearing it as long as you like you’ll just have to keep the area clean so it doesn’t look bad.
All in all coating your jewelry is generally your best choice.
